PUCL strongly condemns the police brutality on BHU

Human rights organisation PUCL strongly condemns the police brutality on BHU students and demand suspension of police sub inspector Mahesh Mishra for his indecent behaviour with the female students.

On 27th of may when UP chief minister was on varanasi visit, the students of BHU from BCM and of IIT from SFC protested against brutal assault on dalits of saharanpur and put forward the demand for justice very peacefully by holding playcards in their hands. They were dragged and forcefully pushed into truck by police and police also started beating them badly and also verbally abused them alongwith threat of encounter.

The girl protestors were abused by using obscene words for them. The lanka police station inspector Mahesh mishra even after being on such a responsible Post he himself beated girl protestors and threatened them in a very abusive language as putting petrol in their private parts. He called them sluts and prostitutes . This feudal, patriarchal and anti women police action is very condemnable.

PUCL strongly oppose the proceedings by the UP police. UP police has violated three kinds of human rights.
Firstly, the Constitution cannot stop any peaceful protest. In a democracy, everyone has a right to express or oppose anything in a peaceful manner. Therefore, the police interference in a peaceful protest is against the Constitution and is an attack to democratic rights of citizens.
Secondly, if due to any reason, if citizens are arrested, then they also have some rights. Police can neither misbehave nor inflict any kind of violence on them. But in this case, the police not only behaved cruelly with the male students but also with the female students.
Thirdly, touching a female by a male police constable is a crime but the police sub inspector beat them as well as attacked them with sexist abuses.
Mainly, the behaviour of police sub inspector Mahesh Mishra was patriarchal, feudal and objectionable.

Hence, we strongly condemn this shameful act by the police and demand from the Centre and the State government that the responsible policemen, specially Mahesh Mishra must be immediately suspended. This will be a step towards establishing law and order in the state.
