CBI arraigns 9 SPOs as accused in Dantewada violence of 2011

Several Special Police Officers (SPOs), who subsequently became police constables of regular district force, have been arraigned as accused in two of the three final reports filed on Monday in a court by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chhattisgarh. Supreme Court of India had directed the CBI to investigate incidences of violence occurred in different villages of Dantewada district in the state.
The CBI investigated regarding the involvement of numerous SPOs / Policemen in the so called operation conducted by the district force. In all nine SPOs have been arraigned as accused and they are to be prosecuted under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 436, 326, 147, 440 of IPC, which reads mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, punishment for rioting and mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt respectively. Top officials from CBI were present in the court today and the final reports were filed in the court of Special Magistrate for CBI cases Shantanu Kumar Deshlahre.
The incidences of violence are dated back to 2011 and investigation into these cases started after a writ petition filed by Nandini Sundar and others V/s State of Chhattisgarh. It needs mention that the incidences of alleged violence included torching of houses in Morpalli, Tadmetla and Timmapuram villages and also offences of unlawful assembly and wrongful restraint. Supreme Court of India passed orders directing the CBI to take over the investigation of the entire matter and to take appropriate legal actions against all individuals involved in the incidence of violence mentioned in the petition.
In a much discussed matter of arson and other incidents of violence occurred in various villages of Bastar/Dantewada, the CBI pursuing the Supreme Court order investigated for the first time the involvement of SPOs working under the direction of state police. In another case where Swami Agnivesh had to face the wrath of some miscreants, CBI investigated this matter and in the final report 26 persons have been made accused under different sections of IPC, the sources added.
