VISAKHAPATNAM : Minister for Panchayat Raj Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu
said that the State government will never act against the sentiments of
tribals over bauxite mining. Speaking at a press conference here Thursday,
the minister clarified that the Forest Department, upon obtaining the
environmental clearances for bauxite mining issued the GO No. 97, for
alienation of land for mining according to the administrative procedures.
However, an entirely separate GO must be issued by the Department of Mines
for taking up mining activity, the minister said and added that the
activity will not be taken up without the due consent of the tribals.

The government would conduct a series of meetings with the tribals and
local leaders on the issue. The government would also explain to the
tribals about the bauxite mining activity in the neighbouring states of
Chhattisgarh and Odisha. A detailed discussion and review meetings would be
convened on the environmental impact and water pollution. After all these
exercises, the government would take a final decision to lift the bauxite
reserves in the agency area, the minister said.

He pointed out former minister P Balaraju’s recent statements against the
TDP government and clarified that the Congress government had only given
permissions and land allotment to An-Rak Alumina Refinery at Makavarapalem.
Without revealing the facts, the former minister was misguiding the people,
the minister alleged.

On individual toilets, the government would clear pending subsidy bills to
the tune of `70 crore in the next three days. The government had decided to
provide subsidy to 13 lakh individual toilets in the State. On the CC roads
in the 13,000 panchayats in the State, the minister said that `2,000 crore
was needed for roads. The government had cleared Panchayat office power
bills to the tune of `320 crore and another `400 crore was paid from the
Panchayat funds, he added. In order to reduce power bills in Panchayat
offices, the Ministry decided to replace all the filament bulbs with LED
ones, he informed.
